So if you have Gmail, you know about the little newsfeed at the top of your inbox, and if you don't, well: Gmail has a newsfeed at the top of its inbox. It's got short headlines that change whenever you navigate within the window, you can control what news sources are up there, it's pretty sweet. When you're in your spam folder the feed changes to recipes involving spam.

Anyway, the reason I mention it is that there's an automatic preset of news sources when you first get it, and one of the ones I got is The Motley Fool, which is a stock tips website.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST in stock tips. I own stock but it's all in a money market fund and I've never touched it. I'm not even good at MATH.

But the completely weird thing about The Motley Fool, and the reason I still have it on my newsfeed long after I customized it, is that it has the world's most insanely compelling headlines. I seriously do not have a clue how they do it, but I find myself clicking on links up there CONSTANTLY. And I am NEVER interested in the resulting article. Basically I keep it as a case study in the art of headlines, because whoever they have doing them is a motherfucking genius.

I have no real reason for posting this except that I've always wondered how they do it, and I'm curious if there's anyone else out there who's had a similar experience where they keep getting sucked in by headlines to stories they don't find remotely interesting.

OH MY GOD IT'S NOT JUST MEEEEEE. I don't even - like, I don't understand how they DO it. I know it's not going to be interesting and yet!

There is no newsfeed on top of my inbox. :( Gmail, stop recognizing my country and hiding interesting features!

The Bild, the trashiest of all German newspapers, has AMAZING headlines. Their articles are horrible, but every time I walk past a newsstand, their headlines make me want to buy the paper.

Dude, it's so not just you. I ALWAYS look at their headlines and click things too. They are MAGIC.
