I had a really frustrating day, the kind where you're reminded over and over again that male = default and women's concerns are specialty concerns and there's a solid mainstream of scholarly opinion that says you should consider arguments objectively and not allow yourself to be at all affected by the flaming misogyny poking around every corner of nearly every text. A lack of concern, of course, which equates to you pretending (just one more time, just for this one text, just for this one class) that you're NOT a woman and shouldn't ever let yourself think like one. Fuck you, social theory teacher, fuck you, patriarchy, fuck you, dude in my class who got so horribly and vocally offended that I suggested he might have something called "privilege". And of course meanwhile I have not only a head cold, but also vicious menstrual cramps and PMS, because there's nothing like a sense of irony to get you through the day when you're a political minority. I mentioned the cold at the end of the argument to defuse tension; I didn't mention the time of month. I'm not a moron.
I could, if I chose, find some irony in the fact that I immediately came home and vented my rage by cleaning the entire kitchen in victory curls and a fluffy white skirt and mopping the floor twice, and am now about to start baking an apple pie in a frilly floral apron, but fuck you: I see no irony, APPLE PIE IS DELICIOUS, AND YOU COULD EAT OFF MY DAMN FLOOR.
*steams from the ears*

I'm sick of having to pretend tat because things are better than they were (says who?) that we shouldn't point out that things still suck now.

I was in a Political Science seminar and we were discussing whether our duality of law is fair and just. You see, here in South Africa we have a conventional Roman-Dutch legal system with courts, magistrates and judges and we also allow a tribal law system to co exist alongside it. The tribal law courts has one elder presiding, the elder has to be male. A woman, even if she has a grievance and lives in a rural area far from any source of 'western justice' may still not be heard in tribal court - unless she can find a man willing to represent her.
I mean this in the most literal way, she may not speak in court at all. So if she were raped, or dispossessed (not that black women are allowed to own property in tribal law) etc, she would have to find a man willing to represent her and then hope that he does her case justice. This, in the country with the highest rape statistics in the world.
And when I suggested that tribal law was a) patriarchal and b) unfairly discriminatory toward women, I got shouted down by some angry male. Who then also called me racist and told me that I didn't understand because I didn't belong to a tribe.
I have no idea what my response was going to be but I'm pretty sure it was furious. I didn't get a chance to repond, though, because my lecturer refused to brook ad hominem attacks and made him leave. I think the fact that the lecturer was female may have had something to do with it :P
