Guys, after another 11 hour car ride, I am HOME. And fully connected to the internets once more. \o/
shoemaster, email me about that thing if you're around?
On the way home, we listened to a book on tape that must have been written in the seventies or something, and oh my lord the SEXISM! It was pretty crazy rampant. The "villain" was this "frigid, virginal" social worker with "ice-blonde hair" whom we were supposed to both pity, for her sorrowful naiveté about the Real World, and despise, for her inability to cook and/or respond properly to our (smarmy, disguisting) hero's advances. UGH. I think my favorite part was when "Daddy" (the Virgin's father) wondered with Our Hero whether the reason women are incapable of cooking on a charcoal grill was A) their innate inability to keep from meddling with a good thing or B) a vast conspiracy to "make men do their cooking for them". AAAAAAARGH *WASHES OUT BRAIN*
The most ridiculous thing about the whole experience was that in between listening to this tape, I was reading bits of Ardhanarishvara part 13 which I had printed out for the car ride. So it was like gender politics table tennis: a bit of fascinating exploration of sexual identity, a bit of misogynist tough guy police drama.
Also,
mina_de_malfois is rocking my fucking socks off. *draws hearts* Other things that own my life lately: Saved by the Bell Quote of the Day; Joe Flanigan (SHOCKING); this random Sentinel chan by
cesperanza; Alien!Clark recs by
svmaria; the All CW All The Time Kink/Cliché Challenge (especially this UTTERLY SILLY popslash AU);
mutecornett's fantastically fascinating artist recs.
And I was thinking about femmeslash, after talking to
joandarck, as in I should write some? But I can't think of any pairings off the top of my head that interest me. Hmmm. *taps fingers thoughtfully*
Uhm, there's probably more but I'm too tired to think of it. I'm going to BED. Laters!
ETA: In other news, I lose at life. See this exchange for evidence.

Hmmm, Maggie/Thatcher! Interesting! I definitely am intrigued by the possibilities of Thatcherslash. There's Frannie/Thatcher, too... "You're touching me."

My response to that audio book as interpreted through emoticons and asterisked action: o_0 *pause, then stab* :D
I think that exchange means you win. Anything that can make me laugh that hard must be of the good.

I could not even decide whether to stab or laugh because it was just SO over the top ridiculous, you know? But, mostly stab.
Yay! I win! Laughing at me or with me, it is PRETTY MUCH the same thing. Laughter is, as you say, of the good! \o/

Hey, should I read Ardhanarishvara? The pairings info deters me. I like Rodney/John or Rodney/Ronon (but not both in one story) and I can't stand threesomes/moresomes. Thoughts? Advice? Tell me to get lost? ;-)

GET LOST LOSER. :P
But for reals I think that yes, you totally should. See, I am a total OTPer, and I cannot even DEAL with the idea of two (or MORE) overlapping pairings in the same story usually, but this one is just SO good and SO interesting that I think it's worth it, even with the ambiguity. And so far, there hasn't been threesome shipping, which yeah, I hate too. Basically what I'm saying is: they haven't hit that button for me so far, and I'm willing to keep reading, even with the risk that they might do so eventually, because it is just that good. Hope that helped? Never be reluctant to ask me that kind of question; it's something I obsess about too!

But it was very, very bad.
Very bad.
So bad.

So I probably shouldn't go around mentioning it to people. Brain-glitch!

And THAT is the problem in a nutshell, if you ask me. It's hard to find good femslash because it's hard to find good potential f/f pairings in media. And if you feel like you're forcing it, it doesn't work.

Hey, at least some people claim that being gay *might* be genetic. No one claims that being gay runs in a specific military expedition, like all those fics where EVERYONE ON ATLANTIS is fucking someone of the same gender. WTF?
That's it in a nutshell. Out of all the characters I know, Frannie's maybe the best suited to suddenly realize she has all this time been obdurately pursuing the totally wrong path in romantic relationships.
blah blah blah
Haha! Oh, I do hate everybody's-gay stories. To me that undermines the slash by making it just - oh, just reversing everything to backwardsland, so none of it's real, instead of forcing the straight world to have gay IN it, which is more what I'm into, I guess.
I have seen a *few* not impossible scenarios though - like in The Professionals, Cowley handpicked his team and has little to no supervision. The argument that a closeted queer operative would be more likely to give others more of a chance makes some sense. And even that he might assign them to each other as partners since he knew they wouldn't bother each other, although I'd think the danger of their hooking up and breaking up spectacularly might outweigh the benefits. /end digression But even if you can sell me on the scenario, I'm not sure I'm interested.

Yeah... Frannie can have just about any mental hiccup and not go OOC. Whereas if Thatcher or Elaine liked women, they'd know it already, and either be discreet about or not do anything about it, for career reasons.
Re: blah blah blah
What you said. Thatcher and Elaine are just WORLDS more self-aware than Frannie.

And, okay, yes, the book on tape sounds rather disturbing in many ways, but, um, mostly? OMG, thank you for the link because I hadn't checked Ard in about a week and oh, glory. Heh.
And you should absolutely write femslash because I too am dying for some good stuff, so. Yes.
*pets you encouragingly*

The consensus seems to be that I should do it. Now, to hunt down the muse...
