So, guys, I have recently discovered that this LiveJournal thing can be used for things such as posting! And then other people comment on your posts, and you can have conversations with them, and it's FUN! Also, an enjoyable thing: having more than six icons.

Oh, wait, you knew that? Well. Huh.

Today is a good day I think for questions I don't really expect people to be able to answer!

1. Where did the phrase "In conclusion, Ray Kowalski" originally come from?

2. Why did J.K. Rowling feel the need to pair off her two most queer-coded characters? I mean, come on.

3. Why is Joss Whedon so totally fucking awesome?

4. This isn't a question, but I can't tear myself away from this.

5. Why is it that I try, endlessly, over and over again, to find the white point on each successive photograph I scan from our old family albums, when I know in my heart that it will turn out, once again, to be my bare white ass?

First of all: w00t, LJ! *Paul Gross arms* I remember a time when I only had three icons. I don't know how I lived back then.

1. I have no idea. I saw it on one post, and then it started cropping up elsewhere. But I don't remember who wrote that first post.

2. Because she is an evil, cruel woman. Duh. ;)

3. I ♥ Joss. That is all.

4. I ♥ OK Go. How have I not seen that video before?

OMG, how did we survive? Dark days indeed. I remember being EXCITED when they introduced 6 userpics for unpaid accounts! *shudder*

1. I have seen it EVERYWHERE – on polls, entries, everything. But where did it come from? The world may never know!

2. Srsly.

3. ♥ ♥ ♥

4. This is the first I'd ever heard of them! They are SO GREAT.

5. Just to clarify, these are BABY pictures! Not, like, random ass shots. But it is so sad – I keep being like, maybe in this one, it's the SHEET OF PAPER! Or the BARE LIGHTBULB! But no, the whitest thing in the picture is, inevitably, my butt.

Also, I just scanned a picture of myself dressed as a mouse talking on the phone. Uhm.

As far as I know, I was lucky enough to escape with very few future blackmail, we-will-show-this-to-any-boyfriend-you-ever-have, naked baby pictures. But I tend to be the whitest thing in pictures now, and I'm talking about my ARMS or my FACE, areas of the body that have no business being so reflective.

Also, I just scanned a picture of myself dressed as a mouse talking on the phone. Uhm.

*curious head tilt* Dare I ask?

Yeah, well, my mom's a photographer, so. PICTURES GALORE.

*curious head tilt* Dare I ask?

You can ask, I just don't know the answer! It was Halloween, so the mouse thing makes some sense, but I have no idea why there's a phone in the studio with me.

1. According to Google, [livejournal.com profile] minervacat.
And I don't even know who Ray Kowalski is.

2. Uh, it was totally done for that exact reason, i.e. she does hate us. Which is sad.

3. Someone had to be.

4. ...wow. I had seen the "Million Ways" video, but... these guys really are awesome. XD (Had you really not heard of them before? ...I have like two songs?)

5. It's got something to do with human nature, but there wasn't room in my senior-year schedule for psychology so I really can't get that one. Sorry.

1. You win at Google! And oh, honey. When we get to Chicago? You will.

2. I suspected that might be the case.

3. It's a tough job...

4. They are MADE of awesome. (Oh, really? Well, if you happened to feel like uploading them, I wouldn't say no to a link...)

5. Oh, well. I guess I will just have to perservere.

1. Yay! *♥ Google* ...I'm sure I cannot wait.

4. You *have* seen the Million Ways (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=48A07377100E0969) video, right? (More dancing, yay!) Here (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=5444972618E96810) is another one I like, which you may have heard.

Yay, music! *snags*

I am SO nervous about my housing! It STILL HASN'T COME.

:D I hope you like it!

...gah. That's just uncool. The mail was late yesterday, so I can sympathize a bit. XD;;

1. I first saw the "in conclusion" phrase in one of [info]cleolinda's Movies in 15 Minutes - Troy, yeah, it was Troy. Posted June of 2004. Achilles has this cute little boyfriend/cousin Patroclus, with whom he totally does not sleep, except to the extent of how he so does. So she has:

ODYSSEUS: Hey, man, what up?

ACHILLES: Nothin' much [dodge, parry, stab]. Just teaching Patroclus [dodge, parry, dodge] to fight [stab].

ODYSSEUS: Lookin' good there, kid. What is he, your--

ACHILLES: Cousin. He's my cousin. Cousin. Totally my cousin. In conclusion: Cousin.

ODYSSEUS: Whatever.

I guess I always figured either it had rippled out and the "In conclusion, Ray Kowalski"s were references to that, or that both it and the Ray ones are ripples out from some older, similar ur-joke.

2. Hello, I think you just answered your own question. (Although Remus didn't strike me as queer in the books, but granted he might as well have been wearing a rainbow tie in the movies.)

the others, no opinion. re-commented to fix formatting, sorry.

Oh hee, Troy in 15 minutes! I had forgotten how ridiculous that movie was. And yet, filled with everwhelming hotness.

I'm guessing the "In conclusion" thing is some kind of Ur-joke (and hi, I love that phrase). But "In conclusion, Ray Kowalski" seems to be a specific instance of it that is very popular, and yeah. I really didn't expect anyone to know where that particular thing comes from.

And re: Rowling, I think you're right. But, come on! WHY did she have to do that? It wasn't hurting anyone!

What's an Ur joke? *is pretty*

It's a play on "Urtext", which means the authoritative edition of a (musical) work. From the German for "original". So I take Ur-joke to mean, like, a proto-joke, the joke from which other jokes have sprung. *pats you*

So far as I've known, [livejournal.com profile] minervacat used to end every post with it - regardless of content - and it spread from there? But I'm not sure if she adapted it from something or if that was the very genesis of that particular phrase. I just know that much because in Cleveland last y ear me and Joy (http://rhythmsextion.livejournal.com) and Izzy (http://izzybeth.livejournal.com) were talking about due South (um. incessantly. *sparkles*) and [livejournal.com profile] tenar was all "who IS Ray Kowalski, because all I know about him is (insert Minervacat - who was on Tenar's flist for ages, I gather - anecdote here.)" So we explained. And then took to saying it ourselves if only because it drove her nuts. *is a bad person*
