I read some badfic yesterday, and oh my god, it was really effing bad. It was the kind of thing where you're suckered into believing it's not THAT bad, just a little melodramatic, maybe! And then you get to part 38 and literally everyone in the story except the main characters is homophobic/a child abuser/a gay homophobic child abuser. And also one of the main characters hits the other one sometimes but that's okay because they're in love and it's for his own good and he didn't hit him that hard really. And also lube is just something people use when they don't love each other enough to go without. God, and by then you can't just STOP, you need to see what HAPPENS, and so you keep reading it and reading it and crying a little in your soul. You know?

And then you have a fourteen-email conversation with a friend about how bad it was and how you read the whole thing.

Ahahahah, oh, BADFIC. I use to read it, and then I became scarred for life, and now I am really, really bad at taking risks so I just stick to recs or author's I know unless I am really desperate.

I think all badfic follows a pattern, tbh! And that pattern almost invariably involves child abuse.

Srsly, someone should write a shorthand glossary of badfic symbolism.

Oh, god, dude. I know. I read things like that and then end up flailing in horror at anyone who happens to be near me on chat at the time. Sometimes, I even manage to get them to read it too and then we both screech and flail.

And then I mourn the braincells killed during that period of reading.

The frustrating part is that I ALWAYS read the badfic Allison sends ME, but she never reads the stuff I send her! WHY AM I THE ONLY PERSON I KNOW WHO ACTUALLY READ THE HEROIN RAPE FIC OMG SOB

Okay, thesis: that there is waaaay more MCR badfic than FOB. I think it's coz they're kinda trauma sluts over at the MCR machine, and badfic abhors a cheerful band! I mean, not that Pete doesn't give them some fodder (see latest blog entry re injecting birthday cake wax wtf) (altho i do like the bit about his hips, yum) but for whatever reason those MCR dudes are clasped to the bosoms of the angst-epic badficcers like long-lost firstborns. Meanwhile, I like the ones where someone gets turned into a llama and Bob is an excellent seamstress and Ray gets his hair put in cornrows and Frank and Gerard enter the Eurovision and omg win!

Your theory fails to take into account the MASSIVE amounts of Panic badfic, though! THOUGHTS?

Damn, those Panic boys fuck up the curve. I'm not so much up on their antics, so my theories are flaily and hesitant but i would GUESS that it has something to do with the amount of velvet they wear.
