Let me preface this by saying that in the last week I've become completely obsessed with Doctor Who. I. Love. This. Show.
So I just watched Boomtown, and the restaurant that the Doctor and the Slitheen have dinner in is not a set! It is a real restaurant that is really in Cardiff, on the bay, and I HAVE EATEN THERE.
See, on my trip to England in April, we also spent a few days in Wales. Our bed and breakfast was in Merthyr Tydfil, which is less than an hour from Cardiff, so I insisted we go have dinner there one night. After all, it's the capital, and there's some pretty cool rebuilding going on there which I'd read about. So we drove into Cardiff, got hopelessly lost, finally found Cardiff Bay, and went into literally the first restaurant we found, starving to death and desperate.
The hilarious thing about this whole adventure is that I hadn't watched any Who at all before going to Wales, and if I had, I would have been trying desperately to make my parents go find the restaurant, which might, in the mood my father was in, have resulted in him killing me and throwing my body in the bay. And yet I managed to stumble into it by chance, and recognized it months after the fact in my new favorite show. There is one restaurant in Cardiff I've eaten in, and one show I've ever seen that's had episodes take place in Wales. CRAZY SMALL WORLD.
Incidentally, the food was quite good.
