In the most recent update at Fandom Wank, the OP says:
And hahahahahaha, oh God, it's kind of true. *cries* Last week, my roommate asked if I was going to go watch the House season finale, and I just GROANED, because – hiatus is only just beginning, y'all! School is letting out! The last HP book is being released! And that's coming after FanLib, the Mary Jane maquette, and Strikethrough '07. This is going to be an interesting summer to be a (LJ-based, slash, media) fangirl, I have a feeling. In the "interesting times" sense of the word.
Remember a while back when I said I wrote a long-ass meta post and LJ ate it? Well, I'm not going to retype it, because a) I'm lazy, and b) I have a feeling it might have been slightly inflammatory, and I'm not really interested in that nonsense. Everything I write lately comes out clumsy, which is probably a result of finals. But here's the link I would have ended it with:
metabib. Because Due South is an old fandom – in terms of age of fandom, age of participants, and participants' level of fannish experience – and because bandslash isn't, and because that adjustment has been a little weird for me. It seems to be a lot of people's first fandoms, actually, or at least their first outside of HP, which is not a very rooted community. And hey, I believe in knowing your history.
Also, GIP. I love
gandolforf's icons THISMUCH.
Uhhhhm what else is new. Let's see. My absolute favorite thing in this world is really well-written fic with a wretched, clichéd premise, but THAT'S not news. See: Take Center Stage And Step Up to Save The Last Dance (He Was A Sk8er Boi). GOD, YES. I want all the fic in the WORLD that is based on awful teen movies and romance novels! I could read well-executed clichéfic for the rest of my life, exclusively, and I'm not even ashamed.
OH HMMM MAYBE THERE'S SOMETHING ELSE I'M EXCITED ABOUT, BUT IDK WHAT IT IS. HUH. SOMETHING - THAT IS HAPPENING IN LESS THAN A WEEK? SOMETHING INVOLVING INTERNET FRIENDS AND EMO BOYS AND SHENANIGANS? IT IS ON THE TIP OF MY TONGUE HONESTLY, PERHAPS I WILL REMEMBER LATER.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the Pötterdämmerung is sending wanks ahead of it, paving the way for its coming. And then it will descend upon a fandom ripe with paranoia and ready to go up at the smallest spark.

Ahahaha, never a dull moment. [g] (See, all my friends are like, "Homgz, I need excitement in my life," and I stare at them blankly and cry a little bit.)
Also, I completely get what you mean about the disconnect between shifting from dS to bandslash (disregarding the fact that I picked up half a dozen fandoms in between -- but I wasn't very active in them, so they totally don't count [g]).
It's not that I don't love bandslash -- I do, I really, really do, but I feel that the community involvement is just so different, particularly because dS is such an integrated, friendly, and, as you said, old fandom. It's just...strange, sometimes. (I could go on and on about this, but I totally should be studying for my TWO FINALS TOMORROW, OMFG I AM SO STUPID, so, yeah.)
Thanks so much for linking to

HAHAHA, this made me laff and laff. I KIND OF HATE YOU A LOT FOR LIVING IN CHICAGO AND GETTING TO SEE THEM LIVE THERE.

I know, dude, I know. Due South and bandslash are so different, and I've gone from feeling like a tiny baby to feeling ANCIENT, because, God, at least I'm not [remainder of this sentence redacted to avoid offense]. There are obviously a lot more older fans, in all senses of the word, entering this fandom recently – but I still feel kind of like an old lady clutching at my skirts while the hooligans run wild in my begonias.
And man, with this recent crisis, it's been STARTLINGLY apparent how much of bandom is disconnected from the historically rooted segment of slash fandom. The lack of meta has been seriously notable, especially considering that one of our own,
Hahaha, that place has eaten WEEKS of my life. :D Enjoy!

I KIND OF HATE ME TOO. OH WAIT, THAT'S A LIE. *DANCES*

Oh believe me, I know. I'm allergic to drama, absolutely hate it (which is why I love the dS fandom [g]), so these past few weeks I've just been kind of boggling and realizing that this is only the beginning. [cries]

OH MY GOD, YES. I was starting to get really, really verbose in my response about meta (or the lack thereof), and then I realized what I was doing so I deleted it, but YES, exactly that. (It's why I still have people like

Saturday I was at the Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival and a band called Mike & Joe covered "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race". I turned to my friend and went: \o/ OH HEY YOU KNOW WHO ELSE I GET TO HEAR PLAY THIS SONG NEXT WEEKEND?

Bandslash is actually my (counts...) 8th(???) fandom. Outside of anime, its my first.
The 'Pötterdämmerung' as the OP calls it will be totally captivating to watch implode. In anime, nothing is ever completely done, there's the manga and anime and fan works and new media and movies and card games and a whole host of other crap tied to the series.
In conclusion: Emo boys rock.

And then we have yaoi thats canon, yaoi thats fully realized.
Manga artists have gotten their start esstenitally writng yaoi fanfic. And this is a recognized practice.
Its a completely different kettle of fish and fascinating to think about the differences.
